License setup, installation and activation

Before you begin

Before you begin installation:

Installing and activating Altium Designer

On-Demand license instructions

Altium Designer's On-Demand licensing offers you global floating license capability without the need to implement your own dedicated server. The system provides a flexible, streamlined approach to licensing, allowing you to obtain a license in a matter of mouse clicks, when and where you want it – the true essence of an on-demand system.

To further increase its flexibility, an On-Demand license can be used in two different ways, or 'modes' – On-Demand or Roaming. The choice of how you use your On-Demand license will come down to personal preference and the way in which you work. You also have the ability to convert a single-seat On-Demand license into a Standalone license.

Standalone license instructions

Altium Designer's Standalone licensing allows you to effectively manage your own license through use of a Standalone licensing file (*.alf). This file can be saved, copied and backed-up as required. The .alf file is reusable on a home computer (in accordance with the End-User License Agreement) simply by copying the file to a specific folder on that computer and then adding the file as part of Standalone License Configuration. You also have the ability to convert a Standalone license to a single-seat On-Demand license.

With a Standalone license, the only time you need to sign in to your Altium account (through the Altium Portal), is when you initially activate your Standalone license, or if you want to convert it to an On-Demand license. Other than that, with this type of license, you really are working in a self-contained, offline fashion – the very definition of standalone.

Private Server license instructions

Altium Designer's Private Server licensing offers you floating license capability through implementation of your own dedicated Private License Server. Your administrator sets up this central server (also referred to as a network license, or local license server) to access and use Private Server licenses. Once a license is in use on the server, that server can then serve the license to multiple local computers. Users on the local network do not need to sign in to their Altium accounts to acquire the seats from the Private License Server.

Requirements for FPGA design

To implement a design in an FPGA you will need to have a LiveDesign-enabled development board, such as Altium's NanoBoard, properly connected to your computer.

To complete the device-specific processing of a design for implementation in an FPGA, Altium Designer transparently interfaces with third-party software tools supplied by the various FPGA vendors. You will require the appropriate FPGA vendor software installed and correctly licensed before you can process your design for a specific target device.

Altium Designer supports the following FPGA vendor software:

  • Actel
  • Altera
  • Lattice
  • Xilinx
